While receiving assistance, families spend a minimum of 20 to 35 hours per week working, in school or volunteering in order to receive the assistance.   • Refer applicants to Community Link for employment and self-sufficiency services

The Children’s Services Division works with families to help keep Highland County children safe. Children’s Services collects information about suspected abuse/neglect, provides services to help families and, when necessary, places children who cannot be safe in their own homes into temporary care with relatives, foster parents or a specialized setting.   • Investigate allegations of child abuse or neglect
  • Provide services to aid the family and involve community partners in decision-making
  • Seek protective custody, when necessary
  • Provide training in independent living skills for older teens

Elder Protection

Highland County Adult Protective Services operates a hotline for reporting abuse and neglect (by self or others) of Highland County adult residents. During normal business hours call 393-3111. After hours contact the Highland Sheriff's Office at 393-1421. The Sheriff will contact a caseworker for emergencies. Highland County Job and Family Services works to:

  • Identify risks to the safety and well-being of elderly abuse and neglect victims
  • Improve the situation of elderly residents by linking them to social service providers and other resources
  • Help identify a guardian through the courts, when necessary, for individuals who can no longer function on their own
